HW 22 - Illness & Dying Book Part 1

The book I was assigned to read was, “tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom. It was published in 1997 by Random House.

Précis: ‘The Audiovisual’: a chapter about an interview at Morrie’s house by the popular and famous Ted Koppel, the host of ABC-TV’s “Nightline”.
·         Gems: Personal meet before interview and Morrie’s perspective of death.
·         Thoughts: Morrie is a strong person. He has lots of hope and knows he will be ok.

Quotes:
1.      “He had refused fancy clothes or makeup this interview. His Philosophy was that death should not be embarrassing; he was not about to power its nose.” (pg 21) I agree with Morrie because I think that death is not embarrassing. Death is a part of life. When he says,” he was not about to power its nose”, it means that he is not hiding the fact that he will die. Morrie doesn’t believe in hiding his illness on the contrary, he wants people to see him for who he is and what he looks like.
2.      “Because Morrie sat in the wheelchair, the camera never caught his withered legs. And because he was still able to move his hands-Morrie always spoke with both hands waving-he showed great passion when explaining how you face the end of life.” (pg 21)   The way that this is written makes it look almost as if they were trying to hide his legs. His legs represent how ill he is and the only thing being captured is his upper body. Yes he speaks with passion but why only tape his upper body? If there is acceptance why not show how ill he is being that he didn’t chose to wear make-up or fancy clothes.
3.      “When all this started, I asked myself, ‘Am I going to withdraw from the world, like most people do, or am I going to live?’ I decided I’m going to live-the way I want, with dignity, with courage, with humor, with composure.” (pg 21)  I liked this quote a lot. I chose it because this quote shows Morrie’s perspective on the way he thinks is living properly. He doesn’t necessarily mean he will live as in he wont die but he is referring to living in hope not by withdrawing himself. Morrie shows a lot of courage because normally the majority of people aren’t too peaceful about knowing their death is coming.
4.      “There are some mornings when I cry and cry and mourn for myself. Some mornings, I’m so angry and bitter. But it doesn’t last too long. Then I get up and say, ‘I want to live . . .’ (pg 21) Even though Morrie is acceptant towards his death it does not change the fact that he is human. He may be strong and keep positive to keep him going longer but truth is everyone is scared to die. It is normal for one to still be upset because their day will come sooner as opposed to those who are not sick.

Wrap up: A connection I have with these quotes is Erik. Morrie and Erik are both similar people. They both want to be accepted as a normal human being even though they are ill. They don’t want to feel useless. “Yet he refused to be depressed. Instead, Morrie had become a lightning rod of ideas.” (pg 20) This quote in particular connects with Erik’s positive attitude. Erik liked to paint and Morrie jotted ideas. In their own ways they liked to share their opinions on how the last moments before death are.   The message I can imply in both cases is Beth’s, which is: "Treat everyone one as what they are, a human being, no matter their position"

**What i posted on bryanna's blog:  "The killer phrase that caught my attention was,"Another point that I think that was good was the fact that she did not have anyone but herself takd care of her husband. Because this is a time where families should be together and spend all time you can with each other.I think that only person/people that should see you at your worst is the people close to you." To me i can see where you are coming from and find it to be true. Death is a stage of your life that should be filled with the last memories being with you family. I cant relate to josh and Ean's son to father relationship because i don't have my father now. Although my dad played a huge role in my life from the day i was born to the age of 7. I was daddy's little girl. Therefore i can partially understand the pain they went through. Beth's love for Erik was immense and i respect her journey with Erik through his death. What i don't seem to understand are her final feelings. Why do you think she didn't cry that much? Can you relate to her emotions or think she was rather "cold"? Do think she is an existentialist or transcendentalist person?"

Note: bry was only t/w member in my group with blog.

** Posted by my mentor: "I like the term "dinner husband". I've never heard it before but I knew exactly what it meant. I like that you contrasted your family dynamic with Beth's. I'd like to hear more about those differences why and how it was harder for Josh than for Beth. Keep up the good work."

**Posted by lily, my younger personi liked the quote that said "Treat everyone one as what they are, a human being, no matter their position" because i feel that everyone should be treated equally and everyone should be treated right no matter what they have done in the past or how they are acting. everyone is human and we all make mistake and should be forgive for them and shouldn't be treated badly.

  1. Intense artist  http://www.erikwood.com/unchartedwatersmovie.html
  2. Moved quickly: love at first sight, lived in apartment together, married after 4 years, decided to have family 2 boys Josh and Ean.
  3. Together 24/7
  4. Diagnosed with kidney cancer on thanksgiving 2006
  5. Couldn't get insurance
  6. "Why is that asshole still walking when my dad is dead." josh
  7. He wanted to pretend he was going to "beat it"
  8. "Treat everyone one as what they are, a human being, no matter their position"
  9. Vacation
  10. Death signs leading to his death.
Viewing Erik’s website which is http://www.erikwood.com/unchartedwatersmovie.html , I found it to be very interesting being that I am a little artist myself. Beth Bennett was correct when she said he was an intense artist. His last paintings were very strong. They all depict different things. There are many so I won’t talk about all but about some that struck me. One of them is 2 fishes kissing. One with a woman face and one with a man face. I interpreted it as Beth and Erik’s last kiss. Some fishes are closing their eyes and I feel like those portray death because a dead fish has their eyes shut. Then there were two with baby faces, I feel like those represent his two children, Ean and josh. Humans "swim" through the "ocean of suffering" without fear, just like a fish swims through water. In general I see it as a human/fish swimming through water symbolizing that humans "swim" through the "ocean of suffering" without fear. Erik saw himself as a fish because he didn’t fear what was ahead of him. He found himself taking on these challenges as a part of life.
"He was not a dinner husband because we were together 24/7". I found this to be super interesting. I have family but I don’t think I am as united. I am not with them 24/7, nor do I want to be. I feel like I need my space. I get bored easily, so spending so much time with someone is not something I would do. She was right about it being love at first sight. They settled quickly. They were each other’s right hand one another. Together they raised a strong family. Beth, Ean, and josh were very strong. A death isn’t something easy to deal with. It’s hard to let go, in my perspective. "Why is that asshole still walking when my dad is dead?" (Josh) josh demonstrates how it affected him so much, he hasn't let go of his father which is understandable. They were best friends. After spending 24/7 with someone I would imagine for it to be hard once you don't. For Beth though, it wasn't as hard.
The lesson that I got from this touching and admiring story was that you "treat everyone one as what they are, a human being, no matter their position they are in". This is a good lesson because sometimes we look down upon other people. We shouldn't judge a book by their cover. One shouldn't be judged by their race, religion, color, height, weight, class, job, etc. Beth proves you can go a long way when you respect everyone because as a whole we are human beings. Through this respect she was able to get insurance and everything she wanted. Everyone loved them even the radiologists would let them go up front all the time. This was a great advantage to Erik and his family. I have a great admiration for both. For Beth because she was able to deal with all this yet peacefully deal with her husband's death. You can tell she loved him dearly. And for Erik because he was strong and never gave up. He accepted everything that came his way without complaining. They are a great example of how one should be united with family not after an illness but always just like them

this thanksgiving....

This thanksgiving was definitely a little different than usual but it was still great. I didn't really experience any anti-body practices. Although, since my stepsister is always trying to look better than me i dolled myself up. I was not uncomfortable but i was cold. I know i could have dressed up warmer but looking good had its price. Body-centered practices occur on an everyday basis. They occur when we brush our teeth, brush our hair, shower, put on lotion, make-up, lip gloss, etc. So everybody pretty much spent time doing body-centered practices.
Thanksgiving is special especially for those whom celebrate it. It is special because it is the only day we give our body the greatest pleasure by eating all we want. We get to stuff our faces feasting on food that's cooked that day. Normally i would spend thanksgiving with my family in LA. But now that i live in NY it is distinct. Last year i spent thanksgiving at my house with my mom and sisters. We did not even cook. Pizza was ordered with a side of chips and soda. As we ate we watched television. I expected this year to be the same because i enjoyed it last year. Turns out mom is now married!!!!!!!!! So instead, this year we spent it at my stepfathers moms house. I baked one of my famous flans and my mom cooked ham. We arrived at their house around 6:00pm. When we arrived we bumped into lots of his family members. Since i am vegetarian, i only had mashed potato, rice, and cole slaw. For dessert i had some pie. Everyone else had some pie and my flan. Which they loved ! Food was good. Around 12am midnight i went o my bestfriend stevens house. We watched movies with 2 other friends of ours, dio, and mimi.
Even though we do have have a member who passed away, my great grandma, i dont think she was remembered or at least brought up. There were only 2 elderly women. Henry's (stepfather) mom and great grandmother. His mom looked great, although his grandmother seemed ill. She walked very slowly, had a runny nose, and a bad cough. besides that everybody seemed fine.

Hw 17 First thoughts on unit.

I have had experiences in the past with illness but not many with deaths. When i was younger i got the tip of my finger and nail cut off with the door. I was too scared and did not want surgery. Therefore i let it grow on its own. I was disgusted by it though so my mom would clean it for me. Not once did i look at it until it started healing. The only experience where i had to stay in the hospital was with a ruptured cyst. The pain was so intense i needed to take tons of pain killers. They put me under ivy. The death experience i had was with my great grandmother. She was in her 80's. I'm not exactly sure what the real reason was but i know that she had many illnesses that lead to her unfortunate death.
I wasn't taught a specific way of perceiving death or illnesses. i know god has given me the opportunity to be here, so there must be a reason for it. Just like living, death is a part of life. We don't know when our day will come, we just know that it will. My family knows it's part of life that's why i view that way. Although, there are such things as illnesses that can shorten your life time. Unfortunately, illnesses affect one in different ways depending on what you have. if your lucky the illness will be temporary but if unlucky it can be the reason for your death.
An unusual perspective i have of death is getting shot or getting hit by a car. For some reason every time i am outside sometimes i feel strange and unprotected. I feel like someone is going to hurt me. I don't know if its just my imagination i don't know what it is but i feel like getting shot is one of my great fears. If i could choose my death i would totally pick to die in my sleep. A greater fear i guess i have is dying in pain. I want to die in a calm, peaceful, and painless way. I don't want to hurt i just want to not wake up one day. I know it would be a happy death. As for my health i don't think i have any unusual perspectives. In my life time i hop to not encounter myself with any life taking illnesses. I want to live a nice life.

outline ideas for project 12

Thesis: dominant social practices in the u.s are seen as 'normal' but in reality they are nightmarish atrocities that result in an unhealthy environment.

*Major claim: the fast food industries major concern is getting profit not supporting their consumers health  and they do this by targeting certain age groups .

(a couple sentences of info leading into claims )

-Evidence:
  • super size me film. (outcome of fast food)

~ Claim 1: their number one consumers are kids and teenagers causing them to be  obese and putting them at a high risk of diabetes at such a young age.

-Evidence:    CBS News: Health Watch

  • article: "fast food linked to child obesity" . . . quote => "Every day, nearly one-third of U.S. children aged 4 to 19 eat fast food, which likely packs on about six extra pounds per child per year and increases the risk of obesity, a study of 6,212 youngsters found." (link: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/05/health/main591325.shtml)
  • article: "fast food linked to child obesity"  . . . quote=> "The numbers, though alarming, are not surprising since billions of dollars are spent each year on fast-food advertising directed at kids, said lead author Dr. David Ludwig, director of the obesity program at Children's Hospital Boston." (link:http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/01/05/health/main591325.shtml)
  • article: "fast food linked to child obesity" . . . hw 7b- chapters 4,5,and6.

*Chapter 4:
Précis- brief summary over old franchisees and new franchisees. How Colorado progresses as new business continue to open. Also, it states the willingness of the banks over lending money in order to start new industries of business. He discusses some of the differences between some of the old and new franchises. In the author’s point of view, it seems to be like he believes you would be able to pursue more back then than you can now. But then again it seems as if he thinks you couldn’t become rich quicker. In a way he sort of contradicts himself.

Gems:
  • Colorado
  • Success
  • Golden days
  • Comparison between fast-food chains back then and now.

Thoughts: I think that the economy certainly was much better back then. I agree with him because I feel like anyone really had the possibility to pursue their purposes. Now a day it’s not that easy to start a business specially if it’s not well sold.

Question:
-What are some statistics of the business being successful now compared to those back then?

 *Chapter 5:
Précis- J.R. Simplot grew up working on his family’s farm in Idaho. He was born in 1909. Simplot pursued great business. He went from being a simple farmer to being one of the larger potato distributors. He was the potato distributor for McDonalds. simplot figured fast food restaurants would need potatoes so he started supplying for them. what gave the fries their signature taste was that hey were cooked in oil that had lots of saturated fat. This is the reason that so many people like fries but what they don’t realize is that its unhealthy. Distributing potatoes has its pros and cons. Pros being that if you’re a large distributor you will make good money. Cons being that you have to sell it for a cheaper price in order for companies to demand from your supply. This causes farmers to gain less than what the fries are sold for.

Gems:
  • J.R. Simplot
  • Pros/cons of distributing potatoes
  • Why the fries taste good.

Thoughts: I feel like this whole process is not fair to farmers. Some work so hard for a misery of money. Why should they work for so little when others are making more money off them?

hw 7- Fast Food Nation chapters 1,2,and 3.

*Chapter one:
Précis- Overview of how Anaheim went from farming towns to buildings and businesses. Mentions Carl Archer and portrays his success as an example of how great the economy was. He went from working with his uncle, to a hot dog stand, to owning several stands, having his barbecue restaurant, and then becoming the founder of Carl’s Jr. with success of more than 300 fast food restaurants. Any dream could have been pursued in that time line. Also contains some historical content of post world war II and the Ku Klux Klan.
Gems:
·        Post world war II era and economy
·        Ku Klux Klan pg14
·        Race relations
·        Carl Karcher’s success w
Thoughts: there were Mexicans Americans suffering through racism and he only speaks about them to his convenience.
Questions:
-Why doesn’t he speak about the race relations? In other words, the racist remarks against Mexican Americans?
- Why were Mexican Americans being convicted to jail for murders they did not commit and why doesn’t he expand on that?

-Is he racist against the Mexican nationality?

*Chapter two:
Précis- McDonald’s and Disneyland have not much but something in common. Their primary goal is to make money. The effective way of making that money is through advertising which in my perspective means brainwashing. Advertising has its way of getting to you because there are various methods of doing so. Some of them consist of flyers, radio, TV, bill boards, schools, amusement parks, etc. They are shrewd businessmen that could care less about the health being of their consumers. It shoes their success in making money thanks to their consumers who buy their ‘bs’ from their advertisements.

Gems:
  • Comparison between Disney and McDonald’s
  • Expansion of business
  • Advertisements success
  • Poor nutrition
  • School systems needs
  • Their ‘catch’
Thoughts: “Super Size Me” the movie, is the perfect example of why McDonalds is not the way to go. Lots of children now a day are becoming obese at a very young age. Their consuming things that are super bad for their health and are becoming less physically active. Parents should make better food choices for their well being. The better you eat the more energetic and active you will feel not to mention it’s an advantage for a longer and healthier life period. Negative outcomes can be obesity, cholesterol, diabetes, etc. last but not least its affordable so more customers are attracted to that. And that is what I consider their ‘catch’.

Question:
-Why doesn’t he include more statistics to back up his arguments? He should include some info on what are the better choices in his perspective.

*Chapter three:
Précis- Mainly focuses on the working conditions of McDonalds for unskilled workers such as the elderly, disabled, and immigrants. But on how it solemnly focuses on teenagers as well.  Teenagers are willing to work more to purchase technology, apparel, and unnecessary things they really don’t need. This causes a percentage of teenagers their education because they know they can just quit and jump onto the next job.

Gems:
  • Working conditions
  • Teenagers
  • Disadvantages
  • Low wage
  • Education

Thoughts: as a teenager I agree. We do love to spend. I am all about fashion sense, the latest technology, make-up, etc. I am and independent student I work for what I have. It does take up some time I have to say. But we don’t all necessarily leave our education. It all depends on whether you have ambition or conform yourself with what you have. There are definitely those who have poor working conditions as well as low wage and then those who strive for better. I have an ambition for money to buy anything I want because there will never be enough. I look forward for a bright future where I will be able to purchase anything I want. But that is why I only work part time. A part time job makes you responsible and gives you time to focus on school as well. So things can change if you cause change. It’s all a matter of time.

Questions:
-Is there even a benefit in the fast food workforce?
-What in it for us as teenagers, obesity?
-If we don’t have an education we will be on the poverty line.
- How can we contradict fast food and begin a healthier food chain?

food diary...

For the past 48 hours i literally ate whatever i wanted. Normally i'm the type of person who would be concerned but his was not the case. I had cranberry juice, almond breeze milk, an apple, cereal, flautas, bunny graham crackers, rice w/ gandules, and organic milk. I had a small portion of each. i had a sip of the cranberry juice because there was barely anything in there. I had like 1/4 of a cup of almond breeze milk. each serving is 60 calories so i probably had about 20-30 calories. I had the whole apple. as for the cereal i had one small serving. I had two flautas my aunt made but im pretty sure it had at least 200 calories or maybe even 300. That was terrible. The bunny graham crackers was one serving and it was 100 calories. arroz con gandules i had was at least 200 calories as well. Organic milk is 90 calories and i had about a 1/4 of a cup as well. Break fast one of the days was cereal then i had an apple, lunch was organic milk, snack was cookies, and rice for dinner. The next day i had almond breeze milk for breakfast, and cranberry juice with the flautas for dinner. I try to rarely have Mexican food now. therefore, the flautas and arroz con gandules was good but not as good as i expected it to be since i'm not used to it anymore. however the apple was very delicious. I love apples!. cranberry juice is my favorite so it was appetizing as well. I'm not a big fan of milk which is why i didn't have much of it. But i accompanied it with some cookies. I know those meals weren't the best choices i made but the only thing i did make the right choice about was the apple. I guess i picked my food based on what i wanted to have. As for the Mexican dishes i only had them because my aunt from Chicago made it and i didn't want to be rude. I'm not going to complain and i feel good about what i ate. But next time i will most definitely think twice before i eat.
 ORGANIC MILK

hw#5. . the routes of the food dominant discourse.

Dominant discourse: a set of participants whom discuss particular subjects regarding certain topics. Mainly media. Normally discussed by people in power who speak of it from a perspective where it turns out being accepted by people.

When i think of dominant discourses i think of people who think they know it all. People often have discourses over whats considered healthy and what isn't. As a vegetarian i consider myself healthy. I don't really have any junk food and consist of vegetables, fruit, water, fiber, basically things i consider healthy. I dont completely agree with what is said out there. I don't need to be influenced by the dominant discourse because i already live by what they say. what they say basically is to stay healthy.

Now a days its shifting towards 'being healthy'. Not only does the dominant discourse talk about it but its also seen. Even though i consider Mc Donalds to be the worst fast food restaurant they are considering changes. they are starting to sell things that are healthy. this is not the first fast food restaurant that's trying to make that change. There is also Starbucks for instance or Wendy's. this chang had to be dne because there are many kids who are becoming obese due to these poor diets. So in a way i agree with dominant discourse because people should eat healthier so they can sustain a better life.

Some topics being discussed regarding food are: eating vegetables keep you well, organic food, eating food that's better for you organic or not, why organic food is better, etc. This shows that dominant discourse thinks that organic food is better for your health. "The better choice."

hw#4 family foodways'

There are definitely is no doubt that things change within time. I know I changed my food ways. As a kid I never really like fast food. One thing I really didn’t like though was meat. Every time my mom would serve me some I would hate it and give it to my cousin without her noticing. When I was younger I liked junk food. In fact, I enjoyed it very much. As I grew older I started noticing all the junk food was bad for your health. I knew so because of the articles and health magazines. Then when I moved to New York I saw it much easier to change my food ways. I am now completely vegetarian and working my way to being vegan. As for liquids I drink lots of water, I don’t like soda. Overall basically I only have healthy things.
My mothers and grandmothers ways of eating have changed as well. Maybe not as drastic as mine but they have. My mom and grandma come from a Latino background. We are Mexicans. To us, price isn’t a problem as long as the food is good. My grandma said that back in Mexico they would have a lot of spicy sauces, rice, beans, meat, etc. the way she described it sounded somewhat unhealthy because she said there was a lot of meat involved. Sometimes even on a daily basis. If not they would have Mexican dishes such as: quesadillas, enchiladas, guacamole, sopes, enfrijoladas, mole, nopales, huevos rancheros, etc. my mom was influenced by my grandma and cooked a lot of Mexican dishes which I found delicious. Both of them don’t cook like that frequently anymore. They both eat more vegetables, fruits, salads, soups, etc now. So they have changed their ways a little since we moved to New York.
I think that what we eat is influenced by what is shown at home, age, and where you live. My family and I changed our ways. The way we would eat in La was distinct to the way we eat now. One of the only things my grandma, mom, and I have in common is that I still like some of their dishes. Besides that they both still have some meat. That’s the difference between us that I don’t. My sister is a vegetarian as well. Therefore home and environment definitely are an influence. As society changes and time goes by, traditional foods start to stay in their countries. Living in the U.S. changes food ways slowly. Sometimes they don’t change at all and sometimes they do in very drastic ways.
Note: instead of taking a picture of my fridge i took a picture of dinner last night.

initial thoughts. . .(hw#2)

When i think about food priorities the first thing that comes to mind is, no meat. I am a vegetarian, therefore of course all my meals have to be meatless. Another priority is staying healthy. I really don't like fast food restaurants. when i come to think about my priorities i am satisfied with them.I love the smell of the vegetables so fresh and yummy. The colors are so vibrant and wonderful that they catch my attention. Not to mention their shape is so intriguing. When i put the vegetables in my mouth i savor the delicious taste. Salad tastes so fresh like the nice green fresh grass. Not that i have tasted it before. Even as a child i always preferred my vegetables. Coming from a spanish speaking family we eat a lot of meat. One thing that  would be cooked a lot would be chicken and that to me is disgusting. Chicken just doesn't catch my attention. When i think of it, i would be eating a dead animal. Steak however, i would be able to have a small portion of but only during special occasions. I became a custom of not eating meat, therefore moving here in Manhattan makes it so much easier for me. Not to mention its so much healthier. I personally don't like to go with the flow as for what i eat. I like to eat based on what i'm in the mood for and if its healthy. I can say that i'm the dominant figure when it comes to my meals. the reason  i consider myself to be dominant is because I don't let the dominant discourse  influence me on the way i eat. i dont let it influence me because ive already been a customed to being vegetarian and not eating processed foods. A lot of people who eat meat say, "we need meat." Reality is we don't. I get my proteins through nuts and beans as well as other things and i eats lots of fiber. My aunt is a nutritionist therefore i can stand strong with my argument.

Well there never really is a time where my meal fails to meet the desires of an ideal meal. Since i am used to being healthy eating the same thing wont bother me. I love fruits and vegetables so any meal including either is ideal for me. There are times when i am not in the mood to eat a typical meal. however, when thats the case i always give it a solution. The solution being that i go out and have whatever i am in the mood for. There are meals that are appetizing that don't include meat. Sometimes i go out and eat in a restaurant. That doesnt mean i will repeat the same pattern everyday. There are just days that we need to get out of our daily routine and try something different. Also now a days there are way more options for us vegetarians. The reason being that the dominant discourse is now shifting towards a healthier way of living. I completely concur with that because i feel that if we eat healthier and stay more active we will live longer. We will stay more active because we will be satisfied and be able to move around. Unlike, sitting around and having no energy because you had meat and feel rally stuffed.

Is food sacred? Are you kidding me! Of course it is! With all honesty i can definitely say, "I LOVE FOOD!!!" One thing i absolutely love to do is eat. Being vegetarian gives you many options. I can eat all day long and not gain any weight. A typical day of eating on my schedule would be a light breakfast, a snack, a light lunch, another snack, snack, then a light dinner. Snacks for me are like a granola bar, fruit, baby carrots, etc. One of my major rules is no eating after 7pm. besides that food is amazing. i can seriously go off and write a whole story about why food is so fantastic. The simple feeling of eating is satisfying.
