Experential, I Say ! ! !

The Story Of My Moms Premature Birth Experience At The Hospital.
In this unit:
When one finds themselves thinking about birth the immediate image that kicks in is a happy couple, a pregnant woman, a hospital, pain, screaming, and final satisfaction. As alot of women say," it was all worth it at the end". In this unit we spoke alot about birth, as well as we had professionals come in, read a book, and watched a film. In my point of view this was the most intriguing unit especially because my mom is pregnant at this moment. I spoke to my mom about her options during birth and shared my knowledge. After conversing with her she told me she wanted to give birth at the hospital. I tried talking her out of it and talking her  into getting a midwife but as much as i tried i couldn't convince her. I told her that the doctors at the hospital don't really care about what's best for her and the child but about what is more convinient for them. She answered that i was wrong because after my sisters birth and mine she was satisfied. According to her she felt comfortable and there was no intervention.

Lies, In My Presence!
My mom says she wants to give birth to my baby brother in the hospital but but but but i don't get it! When i was 9 i was around to witness when my mom gave birth to my second sister. It all started on a very quiet monday morning on June 3 my mom was only 6 months . She started getting contractions and we thought it was normal until they started to get worse. My dad got scared so he took her to the hospital. when we got there they told us that the baby was ready to come out. He told us that the baby was going to be premature, but since it would be premature we didn't know how the situation would turn out. In order to make it a bit safer the doctor told us that my mom had to stay for a week until saturday or possibly sunday so she could complete her 7 months there. She was very dissapointed but agreed to for the well being of my sister. I made sure that i vissited her at the hospital everyday. She looked sad, tired, pale and told me that the food was disgusting and that the nurse wouldnt come around alot to check on her. The nurse wasn't very friendly, on the contrary she had a really bad attitude. Around friday night the contractions started getting worse and they continued all day staturday. Finally me and my dad knew the baby was coming around 10pm. We went to look for the doctor because my mom felt her coming out. Now this is where it get interseting!!!!!! It turns out the doctor wasn't even there yet! We started going crazy because the baby was more than ready to pop out. When the nurse came to check on my mom after her poor job, she asked my mom to spread her legs to see how it was. My baby sisters head was starting to pop out. At  this point my mom could't hold her in no more and started pushing. The nurse got so mad! She said," the doctor isn't here yet so you can't have your baby yet". She had the nerve to go down there and try pushing my baby sisters head back in!!!!!!!!! I know my mom was in so much pain because my dad and i were there. Then she wouldn't stop trying to push her back in so my dad jumped in and told her to stop. She tried causing a scene and started getting feisty so my dad put her in her place. My moms contractions got worse so she didnt care and started pushing. She basically had the baby on her own. The doctor got there late and was there to receive the baby but it was almost completely out. She was born on sunday at 12 am on june 8.When my sister came out she was only 3lbs. Her body wasn't fully developed and she couldnt really breathe properly. The doctor put her in the incubador for a month and we got her on July 4th. When we picked her up she was so cute and tiny. The first couple of months she used to cry soooo much because she would get stomach pains due to the milk. Afterwards she was fine and we all loved carrying her so much that we wouldn't like to share. I asked my mom on what it was like to be away from my sister for a month. My mom  had to come visit her to feed her but it didn't feel right to her. She mentioned that she felt distant as if there weren't really a connection there. Normally a mother gets to have her child but being a month in distance made her very upset.

My Stance For Future Birth:
Witnessing my moms terrible experience was not nice at all. Now that i have more knowledge on birth and the options i have i know for a fact i don't want to give birth in a hospital. The hospital is not the place for me. Doctors do what is most convinient for them and not for the mother nor baby.  If the birth doesn't happen when they want it to happen then they force it with petocin and epidurals, " and if your uncomfortable we'll give you more!" (movie) A women expects a certain birth and receives another. Besides patocin and epidurals harm the baby. When a woman lays down the doctor is in power because its a convinient position for him, a better position is a squat. Wathcing "The Business of Being Born" was great because now i know midwives are a great to give birth too. The day i give birth it will be at a birth center but with the help of a midwive and her "tool", a doula.
 NO HOSPITALS FOR ME!!!!

I liked the last few lines of Christian's story, about how he became more responsible, finished college and is now in Med School. Those are not easy things to do at any age and especially at a young age when there are plenty of temptations to take the easy way out. Life isn't easy without children and it doesn't get any easier with them. Focus and discipline are absolutely necessary if you are going to be successful in life. I am happy to see Christian has those qualities because without them he would not succeed and his child would have an even higher mountain to climb than he does now.

My main constructive comment is on the writing. It is not clear in some places such as how "she was affected in a couple of ways. Through her diet, daily movements, emotions (they were unbalanced, she was moody), and no social life". Also, I believe grammar is important. Small letter I when referring to yourself and no apostrophe in I'm is something I would expect in a casual email but not in school work.

Overall it was interesting and I liked the way you set up the age difference. That was a surprise and kept my interest as a reader.

Your blog was inspirational. I even found a theme, "never give up,its worthwhile in the end." I really like how even though things were complicated there was a solution in the end and a great experience. when you said, " she forgot about all of that pain she went through just to physically see him for the first time. she was very thrilled." That line stood out to me because i realized how much a mother loves their child and is willing to take the pain just to make sure the child is fine or to see it. Something constructive you could probably work on is being more descriptive about the complications or process of birth because then the stories will be like, BAM! Since they were intriguing.

After reading your blog i noticed you used religion. Religion is not a big factor in my life i do believe in god but i'm not a church person. Are you very religious? Because reading your blog gave me that impression. I'm glad things are working out for your aunt. Even though i dont know your mom i can tell your mom is a strong woman, reading what she said was very deep and sweet.
Something constructive can be to expand on conversations next time maybe some quotes like you did in the conversation with your mom. The last 2 stories seemed like bubbles.

Good job. Those are common things women do. I like how you talked about a male's role during a woman's pregnancy. And yes you don't need to be a mother to comprehend what that's like but you won't fully understand until you are pregnant. You could work on being creative. Your blog is very vague and not very descriptive. Work on that bubble strategy i'm sure it will help.

I really liked the blog, especially the first interview, i was actually quite interested in that one due to the fact that you showed me a different way of viewing birth, instead of stating the normal, it was beautiful and remarkable. You grabbed my attention by explaining the hardships, you showed the reality, not the fantasy. You gave insight on how difficult birth can be when its unexpected. You explained very well how it changed each persons life (the good and the bad.) It was interesting to see how at the end the father turned into a 360 and took responsibility. How one baby, a single human being can alter a situation even if it takes time, how an unexpected unwanted child can can change a persons world for better or worse.
The second interview was also thoughtful, but not as insightful as the first, but i like how it contrasted the first interview, this one started off with the women having a good life, and than when she became pregnant, her life wasnt as great for some period of time, but the cons that you talked about were very realistic, you told us different ways she was affected.
Some feedback would be just to maybe explain some of the cons a little more, mainly for the second interview, and maybe ask future questions like if she would go through the experience again or something in that idea, but overall, it was a whole different perspective that was shown and given to me, but it was a realistic view and it was insightful.

----> What Jessica posted on my blog:

i think that those were both two different stories that just about a lot of people go through. for some, they dont feel like they are ready and when they are scared they try to take the easy way out and get rid of it. but at the same time, you have to ask yourself why should i get rid of a life. nobody should be a mistake if it was ment to be then it was ment to be. birth isnt an easy thing to get rid of like anything else. and then on the other hand, a lot of people go through what your second peson went through.
at times you loose your social life because now you cant go out whenever you please or have just anybody over. at least for the first couple months. what i learned based off these two stories is that a baby is a life changer and it shifts your life in a direction you wouldnt imagine until it happens to you. even though you are ready or not ready, you still dont know whats ahead and whats going to happen. birth is a powerful level in life that no matter who you are, your gonna experience it one way or another.

widdle baby stories ^.^

Christian:

Christian Bernal. Thats his name. He is a 23 year old male that i care for and someone special who sees after me. I can't state that he is my best friend because those are few to count but he definitely has been the one to show he cares. So as i sat thinking about who to interview he came across because he is a father of a very adorable child name khris who will be turning 5 this year. He started just like all teenagers do, by having sex. And of course he did not plan getting her pregnant. So, he did not stay around during her pregnancy, he wanted her to abort because he wasnt ready for a child. He was only 17 and getting ready to go to college just like we all are now. Therefore he kicked her out of his plans. Even though he didnt see her during her pregnancy he mentioned that he believed she was affected in a couple of ways. Through her diet, daily movements, emotions (they were unbalanced, she was moody), and no social life. Financially she was set because she had help and since she didnt go out she would save money. At first i thought this girl was his age, until today. She was 27 and chris was 17!!!! He said, " you have to abort because im going to college and i will not be there for you." Chris did not want the child and kept this a secret. His family was unaware. When they found out they were upset but mostly disappointed. After the child was born he appeared when khris was only 3 months. Even though he felt obligated by being pusshed by others he felt guilty and needed to take responsibility. His life changed drastically. Sometimes christian thinks, "what if i had aborted?' That question isnt valid anymore because he is a proud father. After a while he decided to take custody. The childs mother had anger problems, she wasnt stable, wouldnt take care of him and baby would have rashes here and there. So he fought for custody and won because he was able to offer him a stable life. Christian at the end turned out to be a marvelous father and i am a witness. He learned how to be more responsible and the better value of life. Not only that but he finished collge as well and is going to med school besides holding a job and watching after his child.
Birth in a latino culture can be bad. or unstable. A lot of the men walk out the picture because they arent ready. Exploring birth with chris made me see more to birth than what i knew.
I want to explore the males role during a pregnancy and during birth more.

Anonymous:
This girl that i interviewed is a woman who works with one of my close friends.I spoke to my friend jenee and I mentioned what my task was so she introduced me to her and I was able to interview her. When I asked her how pregnancy had affected her physically she answered that she wasn't able to do what her normal tasks were, she got bigger, gained 10 lbs, and her breasts grew as well. She wasn't emotionally affected at all except for her mood swings. It affected her financially because the baby father was not m akin a lot of money and she had to work to in order to be able to support the kid. Another way the pregnancy affected her was socially. She was not able to go out anymore and had to stay home to watch her baby. In order to prepare herself to give birth she mentioned that she would walk a lot and she took swimming lessons as well. She said, " it was hard trying to stay fit." the baby father would support her by coming to visit her to her apartment. During his visits he would be caring and do little things to make her feel better. Her pregnancy wasn't that hard because she knew people who had kids who helped out. Also, her mom was their to support and would be very calm and gentle with her. There wasn't really anyone who would make things challenging for her. Something that was personal and she did not want to answer was, " what thought and feelings influenced your choice to make a baby?" when the feelings come back to her regarding the labor she says that she is amazed at how much time has gone by and how painful it was that it feels as if were just yesterday. I told her if she could remember the small and she responded that it smelled clean like hand sanitizer. She was nervous, or as she said, " there were hid emotions." she had the baby when she was 17. I asked one of the questions I came with in class about how the baby came out and she answered bloody. Besides the father being supportive her baby fathers mom would also be supportive and coach her. And of course last but not least she had a normal birth.

Reflection:
After hearing these stories I learned more. The story I found to be more interesting was my friend Christians. The reason I found it to be more interesting was because he was 17 and she was 27. And to me the girl story was kind of boring it didn't spark me since I had heard most of it before. So it was kind of the stereo typical pregnancy. His story left me feeling like Woah.

hw#35 Others perspectives 1

These past few days in class we have spoken about the "bubble method". This method is helpful to enhance a conversion by taking it to another level  as opposed to a simple conversation with no meaning behind it. We also did an exercise which consisted of turning around to face your partner and use the method to practice and be able to do the same outside of class. During break i was able to sit with some of my friends and apply this to our conversations. They ended up being more productive and i found myself agreeing with them.
I started our conversation by asking what was their viewpoint on birth. Instead of separately asking people I decided to make a circle. i had my friends jenee, Stanley, Steven and Taylor. when it came down to what they viewed birth as everyone agreed it was a beautiful process. the person who seemed more realistic with their opinion was my friend jenee because even though she agreed she also mentioned, " this process has its ups like it has its downs." A big topic that took place in this convo was money. Having a baby requires a lot of money. There is so much that needs to be spent on, clothes, diapers, wipers, food, etc.
To be pregnant is a great thing but only if you have stability in your life. Some women know that having a baby isn't the best thing when their relationship with their boyfriend or husband is going down the drain but some think that by having a baby it will trap them. In some cases this will work, in some it won't, and in others it will start off good then end bad or the other way around. Then there are the kind of women that don't have their   life together and decide to have a child to get welfare. What they don't realize is that not only are they not providing a good environment for the baby but that welfare money isn't enough to raise a child. a baby requires lots of care and nurturing. Teenagers now a day's getting pregnant unfortunately have to end their education and drop out of college to be able to take care of the child. but, what is there to offer to the child if you can't finish your education. Sources where my friends were sharing their perspective from and getting their info from were from clinics, health class, and our surroundings or environment. NOISE! That's one thing my friend said when I asked what came to her mind when she thought about babies. I personally found that pretty funny because its true they cry a lot at first. Friends who said they wouldn't have a baby also said that if they were to have a baby then they would make sure to have a stable life first and be able to offer the kid a steady life instead of doing something stupid.

Thoughts on birth.

Birth. What is birth? In my perspective, birth is the most amazing and beautiful experience in life. It's probably the best thing in life. It is painful but it's worth the pain in the end. After the pain comes the gift, the child, a blessing from above. A child always brings love and laughter and well hard work too. For 18 years a mother dedicates her life to this child preparing them for their mission one day and hoping to have a successful outcome.
My mom is pregnant and I know it's a hard process because she is moody all the time and tired all the time. In a past unit called death,we discussed that once we are dead no one remembers us but that's not true. As I mentioned above birth is the most beautiful thing. The reason being that when you give birth your giving a piece of you to your child. If you think about it your with your child for 7-8 months and your connected. What you feel or eat is transmitted to the child. So in reality one is never gone because pregnancies occur all the time giving away pieces of on on to the next. And even teaching a child when they are young gives you the possibility to teach or share things wih them that they might share with their kid one day and so on.

A question I have is why do some baby's come out white/powdery, some bloody, some purple.

HW 22 - Illness & Dying Book Part 1

The book I was assigned to read was, “tuesdays with Morrie” by Mitch Albom. It was published in 1997 by Random House.

PrĂ©cis: ‘The Audiovisual’: a chapter about an interview at Morrie’s house by the popular and famous Ted Koppel, the host of ABC-TV’s “Nightline”.
·         Gems: Personal meet before interview and Morrie’s perspective of death.
·         Thoughts: Morrie is a strong person. He has lots of hope and knows he will be ok.

Quotes:
1.      “He had refused fancy clothes or makeup this interview. His Philosophy was that death should not be embarrassing; he was not about to power its nose.” (pg 21) I agree with Morrie because I think that death is not embarrassing. Death is a part of life. When he says,” he was not about to power its nose”, it means that he is not hiding the fact that he will die. Morrie doesn’t believe in hiding his illness on the contrary, he wants people to see him for who he is and what he looks like.
2.      “Because Morrie sat in the wheelchair, the camera never caught his withered legs. And because he was still able to move his hands-Morrie always spoke with both hands waving-he showed great passion when explaining how you face the end of life.” (pg 21)   The way that this is written makes it look almost as if they were trying to hide his legs. His legs represent how ill he is and the only thing being captured is his upper body. Yes he speaks with passion but why only tape his upper body? If there is acceptance why not show how ill he is being that he didn’t chose to wear make-up or fancy clothes.
3.      “When all this started, I asked myself, ‘Am I going to withdraw from the world, like most people do, or am I going to live?’ I decided I’m going to live-the way I want, with dignity, with courage, with humor, with composure.” (pg 21)  I liked this quote a lot. I chose it because this quote shows Morrie’s perspective on the way he thinks is living properly. He doesn’t necessarily mean he will live as in he wont die but he is referring to living in hope not by withdrawing himself. Morrie shows a lot of courage because normally the majority of people aren’t too peaceful about knowing their death is coming.
4.      “There are some mornings when I cry and cry and mourn for myself. Some mornings, I’m so angry and bitter. But it doesn’t last too long. Then I get up and say, ‘I want to live . . .’ (pg 21) Even though Morrie is acceptant towards his death it does not change the fact that he is human. He may be strong and keep positive to keep him going longer but truth is everyone is scared to die. It is normal for one to still be upset because their day will come sooner as opposed to those who are not sick.

Wrap up: A connection I have with these quotes is Erik. Morrie and Erik are both similar people. They both want to be accepted as a normal human being even though they are ill. They don’t want to feel useless. “Yet he refused to be depressed. Instead, Morrie had become a lightning rod of ideas.” (pg 20) This quote in particular connects with Erik’s positive attitude. Erik liked to paint and Morrie jotted ideas. In their own ways they liked to share their opinions on how the last moments before death are.   The message I can imply in both cases is Beth’s, which is: "Treat everyone one as what they are, a human being, no matter their position".
